I was suprised after reading The Male Privilege Checklist article by Peggy Mcintosh because men have privileges that they dont know about . As a man i was never taught to fear or walk alone after dark in average public places. It was a thing i never had to be learn and this is true . Atleast for myself. Since young i never had the talk with the old man and women about how i have to becarefull where i go during night time because it is dangerous . My parents automatically assume i can hold my own ( defend myself) . Unlike my sister who on the other hand has had many talks about being carefull where she goes whos shes with etc.. Its amazing to me how both men and women have their own privileges and how they use it to their benefits.
P.S it's funny how i put men infront of women on my 1st post. I wonder why ? Probably tradition
Your post script is great. It seems that most of us are used to putting men before women. Well maybe in the case of your post, it is better that men are first because as you point out parents believe their sons can 'hold their own.' So if anything should happen, men can protect the others? Do you think that this privilege of not worrying as much as women about walking alone after dark has its disadvantages? In other words, doesn't it imply that men should have no fear? But it's human to be afraid, right?
ReplyDeleteBasically it does imply that men should have no fear. That's a good point.I would of never thought about it like that . Like you said we are all humans at the end of the day and we all share the same emotions . I think that the privilege has it's disadvantage's. Getting mugged in an alley can happend to both men and women period. Another factor is at the end of the day men are the ones who go in dangerous places all the time. The probablity is higher for women to get raped or mugged but regardless the fact is it can happen to a men too.
