Stay at Home Dads
Men are getting laid off every day because of our recent recession. According to Perry’s blog Carpe Diem the defective economy has left 1.9 million men jobless more than four times women which were 430,000 who were let go. Some had no option but to be full time stay at home dads. Is this a positive thing for men or negative? Think about it yeah men will get to spend more time with their children which can have many helpful affects on the child’s future according to research but what would society think of these men? Instead of working to bring the meat home for the wife to cook some men have perfected how to fold laundry and change diapers. These stay at home dads use to be construction workers, mechanics and many came from similar masculine occupations. That’s why I give my tip of the hat to these guys deciding to become full time daddy’s. These new stay at home dads is really like any other work, and there labor should be seen as equal to that of a stay at home mom. However, to the public or what Christine L. William’s calls the “outsiders view these men as failures due to them working in a nontraditional occupation” (221). Men that are stay at home dad’s are discriminated against, seen as unmanly and develop a low self esteem due to these stereotypes.
Why are stay at home dads discriminated? Well in general men are the ones who go hunting and bring home the bacon. We see this from the stone age to 1957 Joe Connelly Leave It to Beaver American family sitcom. Some people can’t realize that times are changing and what used to be traditional is not anymore. The reason why society feels a certain way of what men ought to do is because the media, old fashioned traditions and cultures have influence people. They’ve gone by what they’ve only known and sometime’s people can’t change their routine after so many years. What I don’t understand is how stay at home moms are seen as good mothers because of tradition. Yet if a man would play that role he most likely would be seen as lazy and an inconsiderate person for making his wife work. Why?, because he is man and by being so society expects certain obligations from them like automatically knowing how to check oil in a car or identifying the difference between a flat head and a Philips screwdriver.
It’s like tradition blind folds people and don’t let them think outside the box and because of this stereotypes are developed. Just like in the movie Daddy Daycare (2003) with Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin where two guys get laid off and have to become stay at home dad’s and are inspire to open their own daycare. In the movie his female competitors make fun of them and view them as loser’s since to them men didn’t know how to take care of children. It’s very realistic because some people can’t see men being warm ,charming and loving to children without someone thinking their pedophiles or homosexuals. At one point of the movie Eddie Murphy gives up on his goal (which is opening the daycare) and goes back to his old job due to his low self esteem. That’s why some men have doubts on what to choose for a career. I agree when Williams states, “Men are very distressed by these negative stereotypes, which tend to undermine their self esteem and to cause them to second-guess their motivations for entering these fields”(219). This is due to men thinking what society might see them as for having a traditional female occupation.
Now in the present we are seeing an increase in stay at home dads. Coltrane’s Fathering Paradoxes, Contradictions, and Dilemmas says “Although women have been the primary caretakers of young children in all cultures, fathers participation in child rearing has varied from virtually no direct involvement to active participation in all aspects of children’s routine care”(433). This is being seen all over the world and Sweden may be a glimpse of the future. The New York Times ran story on how a new masculinity is emerging in Spoland, Sweden. Where 85 percent of Swedish father take parental leave. If you don’t spend time with your kids you can be faced with question from family, friends and colleagues according to Katrin Bennhold. There are laws that have legislated to give women equal rights at work and men equal rights at home. Reserving at least two months of generously paid and 13 month parental leave exclusively for fathers. Bengt Westerber Deputy prime minister states, “ Men no longer want to be identified just by their jobs,” (4). This is a great thing because it has many positive effects on men and their relationship with their children. No longer will Dads be seen as only protectors, but also as friends or role models. Longitudinal Research shows that families with absence of father’s are most likely to go through negative adult outcomes. As well as, “ lower educational, occupational achievement, earlier childbirth , school dropout, health problems and behavior difficulties” (440). So being home can change a lot in a child’s future. This is very important and some families don’t realize it.
We can see why being a stay at home dad has its pros and cons. The media , tradition and culture are the reason why some men make the wrong decision on either being stay at home dads or looking for a job even if it’s not necessary. These men that have been laid off and are deciding to be stay at home dad’s are not getting the respect they should be. Even though many see it as nontraditional I continue to believe these men are doing a great job raising their kids. People that have a stereotype mentality have to stop thinking the way they do, and accept the changes society is little by little making, but if they continue they will make these stay at home dads feel uncomfortable in what they have to do. Today’s father should be seen as equal as mothers do when they stay at home. Even with all the bad things said about stay at home dad’s I feel they can have a great impact on their children’s life. That’s why the world should not criticize these hard working baby food smelling dads. I just don’t understand why is it so hard for a stay at home dad to get respect like stay at home moms do. Like I mentioned above society is beginning to make these changes slowly, and now it’s up to us to learn to adapt to these changes.

Quick write on The Paradoxe of men fathering young babies

Even though its late its better then never. What can i say about this picture. 0= Yikes. Well to start when i should my father the picture first thing he told me was " what the heck they teaching you in school " lol. I explained to him what the class and reading was about and then he understood. The picture is an eye catcher and the reading goes very good with the picture. Men are known to do labor work not stay at home work so seeing two men with a womb is out of the ordinary. They look like really pregnant. This is really unique and i havent seen a picture like that in a while.

Blogspot 15: Reflection

One of my favorite assignment had to be the debate we had in class. It was interesting how men and women have both many double standards and how they both have advantages. Until right now i still feel that men have it worst the girls . I had fun with this assignment because i learne a lot about both sexes. Another great thing i learn was how to cite works and how to write a better and organized paper. The first paper we had helped me learn how to organized myself before i write. The tips Mrs. B gave us are goin to be used until i finish with school . One assignment i didnt really care about was the one where we had to write about the picture that was in our reading. Its not that i didnt care its just i didnt know i was suppose to do it . In overall i feel blogging is a great way to communicate and a great tool for school. It helps you because you can read others ideas and receive feedback from classmates. I feel that we could of seen more movies about masculinity and less writing lol even though this is a writing class. I cant complain i learned a lot in this class then any of my other english classes including from elementary through highschool. Props to you Mrs. B good job. (=

Being a stay at home dad. Good or bad?
Men are getting laid off every day because of our recent recession. According to Perry’s blog Carpe Diem the defective economy has left 1.9 million men jobless more than four times women who let go 430,000. Some had no option but to be full time stay at home dad’s. Primary Thesis and Annotated Bibliography

Primary Thesis : Men who are stay at home dad’s are discriminated against, seen as unmanly and develop low self esteem due to these stereotypes.

Coltrane, Scott.”Fathering : Paradoxes, Contradiction and Dilemmas. New York. From Men’s Lives edited by Michael S. Kimmel and Michael A. Messner, 8th edition .Ally & Bacon,2010.433-440.Print

I like this article because it shows us how society view men. The readings also show how men use to be portrayed traditionally in today’s society. The history of men and their relationship with their children is very interesting.

The reason why I choose this is because the studies show that “Today’s father is at least adept at changing diapers as changing tires” (Coltrane, 193). This goes with what im exacrtly trying to say in my paper which is stay at home dads should be viewed the same as stay at home moms.

Williams L, Chrisitine. “The Glass Escalator: Hidden Advantages for Men in the “Female” Professions. New York. From Men’s Lives edited by Michael S. Kimmel and Michael A. Messner, 8th edition .Ally & Bacon,2010.219-221.Print.

The reason why I choose this article because it is a good example of how stay at home dads or men with female occupations are discriminated and given negative stereotypes. It also shows how some men have doubts in working in certain jobs because of what society might see them as.

This applys to me research paper because it shows how men are discriminated and how men are viewed by society. This is goin to really help my paper because it backs up what i am saying.

Daddy Day Care. Dir Steve Carr. Perf. Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin.DVD.Columbia Pictures,2003.

Daddy Day Care is a great example of how men are getting laid off and having to be stay at home dads. Due to this they get some negative looks and its good with my research because we see how women and society might view these men .

This is going to help my researcg paper because the movie also shows how some people might rather suffer and be unhappy and work at a place they don’t want just because it gives them the look society expects from them.

Harry, William. “Sweden and the “New” Masculinity?” Blogspot. Blog posting. 15 June 2010. 10
November 2010 < http://masculineheart.blogspot.com/2010/06/sweden-and-new-
Masculinity.html>.
This Article benefits my paper because it showing you what might be the future of stay at home dads. Sweden is a great example of the benefits there is in men staying more at home with their children. This might the beginning of something new and Sweden might be the first of its kind. It also shows how Men and women are now being equal. At least at home.

This is perfect because it shows how a new kind of masculinity is evolving. Now men and women are ghaving the same rights at home and society shouldnt view these men as failures. Stay at home dads are the same as stay at home moms.

Perry, J. Mark. “The 2008 Male Recession? The Gender Jobs Gap”. Carpe Diem. BlogSpot.
5 Dec. 2008. 29 Nov. 2010 gender-jobs-gap.html>
This statistic helps me paper because I shows how many men are getting laid off and the difference with women.

My worst date

The worst date ive ever had was when i was in the 8th grade. I asked this girl to go out with me to this party that a friend of mine was throwing. I knew she liked me and she knew i liked her so i thought we would have a good time. Well atleast that's what i thought. We arrive and everyone loks like they are having a good time some people are drinking even though no one was over 21.The girl I was with out of no where grabed the bottle and started chugging from it like if it was flavored water i was loking like a whimp compared to her because she was going in. Out of no where i loose this chick minutes later someone tells me shes in the bathroom, so i go to the bathroom to check on her and as im by the door she opens it and grabs me to come in the bathroom. This girl was a mess she was fd up. She didnt know where she was so i told her to chill and out of no where she just passes out and comes flying out the door and smacks her head on the floor. Everyone looked at me like i got her drunk and tried to do something with her. Never went out with her again.

Research paper 1st Draft

Many men don’t see that sometimes we don’t act or appear like our true inner self’s because of what our society will say or because we are being drawn to a certain kind of style of masculinity through the media, both visual and print. In Australia’s Canberra Times January 8, 2004 Thursday Final Edition there is an article which says . “Thousands, perhaps millions, of young men had come to terms with their inner yearning for scruffing lotion and Lycra-rich underwear, Mark Simpson revealed in the Internet magazine Salon.com. He named and praised public metrosexuals - Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Spiderman - and announced "a seismic shift in social mores". This is very true because many males look up to these guy’s masculinity and that leads to males acting or dressing a certain way and this replicates. Some magazines endorse a certain type of masculinity such as traditional or feminine masculinity but what grasped my attention was what kind of masculinity G. Q magazine was sponsoring in the year of 2010. Throughout the year of 2010 G.Q Magazine is trying to promote a new kind of masculinity. Not metro, hetero, or retro sexual kind of man, more like a superman. A man that can do everything both sexes can do. I like to call the new era masculinity which is basically a kind of masculinity never seen before.
Male models are showing more than the usual now and days. Just like the ladies, guys are exposing themselves more and more. G.Q’s 2010 September magazine has a peculiar two paged Calvin Klein ad on the 10th page. In the advertisement there is a shirtless black model giving his back towards the camera. All you can see is his back but what really got my attention was how his pants are very low, to a point where you can see his the beginning of his butt crack. Why is it peculiar to me? ,because we normally we didn’t see many male models exposing their bodies parts in traditional masculinity. That’s why this ad is important. This is only the beginning . G.Q magazine did many more things which contribute with what I’m trying to make clear, which is G.Q having a new kind of masculinity. One where both men and women are revealing their bodies more and more throughout our advertisements both visual and print. Back in the days in traditional masculinity men wouldn’t show of their bodies’ parts like they are showing them now and that’s why this specific ad is unique to my research project . The model is showing what usually a woman would be showing.
When were unisex clothes back in style? Since when were men allowed to wear the same clothes as women?. Jim Moore’s “Manual: Look sharp Live Smart.” on G.Q August 2010 Comedy edition magazine caught my attention right away. It was a small article where they are advertising these $78 Alexandra Wang T-shirts which are unisex. There are 2 models one female one male and they are both wearing the same shirt. According to the article, this specific T-shirt will bring the sexy out in both sexes. These kinds of T shirts will give one less fashion and more style. Promoting unisex clothing is a new thing to me because I rarely see something like this. Alexandra Wang is “one of the most buzzed about designers you might not be hip to yet, but your girlfriend definitely is” According to Moore. This says it all. Your girlfriend is the one wearing Alexandra Wang not you (boyfriends). I feel this is relevant because it is endorsing female clothing to men. Now Wang is letting guys wear girl clothes and calling it unisex. This is funny to me because G.Q is promoting guys to model like women and dress like women. What’s next they want us to cook like them too?
You guessed it. Yes they do. G.Q wants guys to learn how to cook. What does this tell me? Man can be ladies too. In February 2010 G.Q Magazine there is an article on 10 essential tips and techniques every man should know on how to cook. From how to “ Smash your spuds, make your veggies taste good, make a killer vinaigrette and how to whip your cream.” These phrases came from the article don’t think I made them up. This to me is very interesting because it adds to the fact that G.Q is trying to teach men how to be like the traditional women. This is crazy how G.Q is creating a new kind of masculinity were men can be men and do women things at anytime of the day. What are they trying to build here? Robots? Realistically before women were the ones who needed to learn how to cook not men. That is consider old fashion or the traditional ways . I see that G.Q is not only trying to have me wearing the same close as women , now they want us in the same room designed for women ( the kitchen ) . Just kidding it’s a joke but seriously common . It doesn’t take too much common sense to see that G.Q is going for a certain kind of masculinity. A masculinity that is not traditional. A masculinity designed to have attributes from both sexes. Throughout the whole 2010 year G.Q wants men to do anything a women can do from modeling, fashion, or cooking.
The media has a great affect on our society and depending on what they display or show us is how we go or act about things. “It’s not just models, it’s actors, it’s advertising, it’s the movies,” said Sam Shahid, creative director of Shahid & Company and a force behind campaigns that first helped put Calvin Klein’s name on half the world’s backsides. There are over 15 International Edition of G.Q magazine throughout the world from Russia , Australia all the way to Mexico. Imagine how many readers? In the year of 2010 G.Q magazine was going for a new kind of masculinity. A masculinity were men can be like women and it would be normal.
